With thanks to FryFriday on deviantArt for the design.
Background: Given that he was only a toddler at the time, Richard can honestly say that he doesn’t particularly remember what the Second Impact was like. What he can remember though, were the days of struggle and the screams of agony that wailed from society around him.
But perhaps we should start off a bit less negative, eh?
Born November 21st -3 AI, Richard’s parents were a pair of mechanical engineers, neither the best nor brightest of the craft, but certainly competent and capable. Often working on demand, the two lead a relatively peaceful life in the city of Calais. Aside of the military forces present, it was of course also one of the most prominent ports in all of France, with many a Ferry service adamant to have their boats kept afloat for the sake of their businesses.
Its position upon the sea, once a great boon, would soon prove to be a terrible fixture with the second impact. As meteor impacts rained destruction upon the world, great waves surged through the English Channel, and with it, towns and cities upon the coastline of both sides were all but swept away. But for those who survived, the nightmare did not simply end there. Europe was besieged by strange monsters, and in response to the post-Impact environment the Britannian Empire decided to fully assert its power over the continent. To dissuade any dissidents or would be competition from rising, their military was raised and mobilised for full martial law to maintain control. The survivors of Calais’ destruction were forced to appeal to them in order to survive, reliant on them as sources of income and supplies around which a new settlement could develop. Richard’s parents in particular soon found themselves having to catch up on several years’ worth of robot design and engineering, as the upkeep of the Britannians’ infamous Knightmare frames became the bulk of their work.
It was from growing up in this environment that Richard grew to somewhat follow in the footsteps of his parents, even as Britannian occupation turned to settlement, and a new Calais grew to replace the old. Never attending formal education – it had been somewhat destroyed after all – he was nonetheless something of an intuitive mechanic, learning how to fix a Yggdrasil Drive before he’d gotten a basic grasp of algebra. His days of youth were spent fixing robots and gathering scrap, often with the intention of building some invention borne of curiosity, or to patch up their wreckage of a home. It was a regular, sometimes painful, but at least continual existence in the aftermath of one of the greatest tragedies in human history. Eventually, after years of an uneventful life, and coming of age, Richard was encouraged by his parents to join Britannia’s engineering corps, taking his skills to a professional life. It would allow him to see the world, earn greater pay for his family overall, and make something of himself. His uneventful life would cease and he could make something of himself.
…Ironically, the seeds of that, had been sown long ago, in the days when he ventured forth into the destroyed Calais, searching for scrap and other materials he might put to use. On this occasion, he was searching by one of its various rivers, searching the banks for any ‘hidden treasures’, as it were. Instead what occurred, strange as it might sound… is that he fell.
Yes, fell. Right through the ground and into some strange tunnel that had apparently been unfound for quite some time, if the cobwebs he hit on landing were any indication. He had no clue for how long – or far – he had fallen, but given what he saw to stand before him, he’d have to guess that it was pretty damn deep. Because there before stood what seemed to be a statue of gargantuan proportions, taller than any Knightmare Frame to be sure, and seemingly even larger than mobile suits. The statue seemed to hold both sword and shield in its hands, as if wait, perhaps even watching.
And before the robot, was a wall. One that seemed to… speak, to the boy. Richard was cautious and scared by this strange thing, and yet, was compelled to approach. Compelled to listen. To the tale of a hero. A champion for good and righteousness, long forgotten by the world for it no longer needed him. But that it should do so, one had but to call it forth by its name…
“…Ideigi.”
But clearly, that was but a dream, for in the next moment, he was back where he was. Maybe he’d hit his head or something. He certainly never found any such crypt ever again after that point, and so was content to let it slip to the back of his mind.
…And yet, even as his eyes look upon a brand new shore… he still remembers.
Personality: Richard is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to his feelings, as is admittedly to be rather expected from someone in his situation. He has no short list of reasons for which to feel animosity towards the Britannians. Most prominently, they occupied – or as they like to see it, ‘brought order’ to – his home country, and then settled themselves right in whilst those who lived there for generations were either carted off into space or left to fend for themselves. Yet at the same time, he knows some of them are earnestly good people, and his acceptance into the Engineering Corps was partly because of a contact that his family had after all their years of work. Not to mention… he’s something of a fanboy for the Strike Witches. Hey, they’re half naked girls driven by incredibly advanced machines. Though, Richard mostly focuses on the machines part…
But moving on from Britannians and onto Richard himself, one way to summarise himself is that he likes to be efficient, at least as far as he himself is concerned. He’ll eat a minimal amount of food, use a minimal number of parts where he can, and always try to be early, leaving things spare just in go something goes horribly wrong with ‘the plan’, as such. It’s the result of growing up in an environment where one couldn’t always count on having consistent supply, and having to be ready just in case.
But, when it comes to machines, that efficiency is also part of setting himself a personal challenge to fix something as fast as he can, but also as best he can. He enjoys being a mechanic, taking something apart, figuring out how it works, but then making it better if he has the chance as well. There’s just something about it all… some form of wonder and delight he finds in it, strange as that might sound. The only reason he might not enjoy it, is if the reason something needs fixing is fact incredibly stupid, because then someone is honestly just wasting his time.
Outside of that in turn, Richard is what one might call a decent person, but at present he is neither particularly heroic or valorous –if faced with a situation, he simply tries to do what he believes to be right.
The social sciences are probably one of Richard’s weaker areas, though he’s by no means incompetent. He doesn’t particularly do small talk – but is capable of it should it come to that – and equally isn’t entirely known for approaching strangers unless he honestly needs (or wants) to. A typical interaction, unless forced to go on by the other side, will typically consist of him asking a question, getting his answer, and then moving on his way. He does know care and concern for others however, with his family often in his thoughts, but also being willing to lend a hand to someone should he have the time available to him. Particularly if they’re a cute girl – hey, just because his interest in machines should mostly trump these things, he is still a guy you know.
Capabilities and Resources: Richard’s a mechanic, and an almost unnaturally good one, as with enough time left to himself, he can figure out at least SOMETHING about a machine, though he is of course going to be limited by his prior experience (or lack thereof) with whatever he’s working on, and the materials he’s got. Can’t use bamboo to fix up a Knightmare’s circuitry, however impressive it might be if you could.
Robot Name: Ideigi
Appearance: http://i47.tinypic.com/2pu0j1h.jpg
(Excuse the obvious scale issue, the artist has admitted to it)
Robot Description: The Great Paladin Ideigi is a super robot that stands a staggering fifty metres tall, neither spindly nor bulky relative to its own size. Its design bears a great resemblance to fantastic representations of the knights of old, its own outer shell modelled after a suit of plate armour. Its colours then are a mixture of blacks, whites, and dull greys that lie in between, with the occasional yellow upon various trims, and the machine’s eyes that lie behind its ‘helmet’. Ideigi wields in its left hand has a great round shield, able to resistant many a blow, at the centre of which is a giant hexagonal gemstone. It can summon to its right hand the titanic Paladin Blade, measuring almost as tall as the machine itself. The true power of Ideigi however lies not in either of these, but the magic that it wields as part of its incredible abilities. As spells of power, their names must ring forth to activate each of them, and channel their strength.
Ideigi is a land fixed unit however, and even if capable of somehow jumping in spite of its size, is neither capable of flight, swimming, or propulsion in the void of space – though it can at least trudge along the ocean floor. Curious is the manner in which Ideigi both appears and leaves the field of battle. Once its name is called – with noble or otherwise non-malicious intent – by its pilot, Ideigi appears upon the battlefield behind them in a beam of great light, before the pilot (and anyone close by) is teleported within its inner chamber. Within Ideigi’s chamber, the pilot sits in an intricately designed, and yet somehow archaic chair, their hands and feet immersed in spheres of blue light. It is from here that their will is then enforced upon the machine, and that transmissions of all kinds – radio, psychic, what have you – may be received, and transmitted back in turn. Once Ideigi is no longer needed, a simple thought is all that is needed to send it away, so that it might heal and mend its form. However, should the pilot so choose, they can also simply leave their seat, and a doorway will open in the machine’s chest region.
Ideigi’s source of its strength – magic – is however also its greatest flaw in design, at least with regards to the pilot. For you see, Ideigi effectively functions as one great big magic circuit, with the pilot serving as the final piece to connect it all together. Even those untrained or severely lacking in the mystic arts will ultimately serve its purpose, as mana can be forced through them, and in turn, their will acts upon it. However, if one is indeed untrained, their body is not prepared for such power, and the very mystic energies they wield can tear them apart if used in excess.
Powers:
Solar Punch: Gathering light around either arm, Ideigi hardens and solidifies it with magic until the point it is as hard as its own fists, before propelling it forward at terrific speed. Swift and powerful, the Solar Punch’s main flaw lies in its lack of directional control beyond a straight line.
Guardian Shield: An enhancement to the already sturdy shield, Ideigi uses the gem at its core as a focal point from which to project a wide energy barrier, capable of resisting more terrible strikes than its material counterpart. However, there are limits to its strength, and these are made weaker the further the barrier is made to stretch. On top of that, the nature of the gem used as the barrier’s focal point means that it cannot be used twice in any given day – once on its own ‘fractures’ it, and whilst it somehow recovers, twice would likely shatter it irreversibly.
Burning Slash: Wielding the Paladin Blade in hand, Ideigi charges it with incredible fire magic, before unleashing the cumulated power in a wide slash that travels towards the target. Similar to the Solar Punch, the Burning Slash however is much more powerful, burning at none other than the surface of the sun itself! …Which of course makes it rather dangerous to use in certain settings…
Truth’s Sight: Less of a combat ability than previous powers, Truth’s Sight allows its caster, and thus Ideigi, to pierce their gaze through obstacles to find whatever might be their target. Such obstacles will ‘fade’ in Ideigi’s view, but remain visible in its eyes, so as to not deceive its own pilot. However, it doesn’t reveal multiple targets – just the one, so its user must choose wisely, and not be ignorant of other combatants.
Paladin Strike: Ideigi’s most powerful ability thus far, and notably, the only of its magic spells to invoke actual melee combat. Summoning a great wind vortex to lock the enemy into place, Ideigi is then thrust forward at a great speed, feet grinding across the ground as it simply charges forward without a single step. Wind forms around the blade and flows faster until reaching an improbably sharp, razor edge, with which Ideigi aims to slash through its enemy, cleaving them in two before the wind is allowed to fade away.
Shining Seal: A magic spell specifically designed to counter evils such as the Demon Kings, it only works once its target has been sufficiently weakened, which for the Demon Kings means when they have been reduced to mere mystic essence. Whilst this can make it problematic to engage the seal, once it has been cast, it would take an event of apocalyptic proportions to successfully damage or weaken the seals to the point that those trapped within may escape.

Suggested Event List: 1) Awaken! Ideigi!: Days are dark for the Earth Sphere, with all strange manner of beings about as human foes scheme. So who is this strange new hero that rises in the midst of disaster? With whom shall they side?
2) The Paladin’s Foe Appears – Behold the Demon King: Just as he begins to grasp the power Ideigi wields, Richard also grasps the reason behind its awakening. Against a foe that can split the very Earth, can Ideigi prevail?!
3) Terror of the Seas – Face Merdra the Destroyer!: The next Demon King has risen, a master of the ocean and threatening to flood whole nations. In a world still scarred by recent devastation, will disaster be prevented, or shall the world fall beneath the waves?
4) Another Ideigi?!: Betrayal strikes upon the battlefield, as our heroes are attacked by none other than Ideigi itself! But then Richard appears to combat this foe! Who is the imposter?!
5) Fight Or Flight – Vientor Soars!: The enemy comes from a place where Ideigi cannot follow! Threatening to lay waste to all it sees with devastating storms, how can anyone hope to stop the might of Vientor?!
6) No Time To Mourn – Double Demon Kings!: With Ideigi lost, Vientor is free to recover as the last of the Demon Kings awakens from their slumber. Threatening to engulf the world in flames, Kasotei must be stopped before he unites with his kin… but what of Richard?!
And always room to expand from there if anyone has ideas.
Sample Post:
Richard sighed to himself slightly as he let the landspinner fall back down to the ground, the wheel bouncing slightly as it hit the tarmac surface.
“Alright, I think I fixed it. Give her a spin.” He yelled upwards, quickly stepping back as he saw the unit’s pilot disappear into the cockpit. If years of working for people like this had taught him anything, it was that it was best to be well away when they turned on the engine. They didn’t have the patience to just kindly let someone walk to a safe distance. Given how the frame immediately shot to the left, not at all far from where he’d been standing, Richard believed it a smart move.
“I can’t believe he broke it. Again.” The young man sighed slightly as he pinched the bridge of his nose, before flicking his dull blonde hair from out of his eyes. In his other hand, lay the parts that he had to replace in order to get the Landspinner working again. Returning to his – admittedly temporary – work desk, in the corner of the larger storage building, he tossed the pieces aside, before settling himself in to begin writing up his letter for new supplies from the homeland. Sure, this might have been some forward outpost on the other side of the world, but surely, one of that very same world’s greatest superpowers have to have more to spare… then again, with the rate at which some of these people went through their existing wares…
Richard groaned as he leant back in his chair. What good would be ordering new supplies then, if the pilots had them wasted by the end of the week? Maybe the risk of no more repairs would inform them to be more careful with the high maintenance, and rather pricey pieces of equipment. Certainly, their small size reduced a lot of the cost, but Knightmares were still tanks with legs in terms of size. It was just… frustrating.
…So rather than that, he began to write out another letter. Something that would take his mind of the stresses of military life, and remind him what – strange as it might sound – good it was doing. As ink was brought to paper, he muttered his work aloud, something he would often do. And thus the letter began, with four simply words…
